The Amulet Recipe
Room 2 of 13 · Level I · Novice · 6 min
The Greek Magical Papyri are working recipe books. Here you learn to build a recipe part by part and make a phylactery with it: a written amulet you carry.
What you practise
A six-part recipe (our study template for the PGM) and a written paper amulet, folded and tied.
The four steps, in text
- 1. Put each part of your recipe in its box. To protect myself and feel safe → Purpose · Paper strip, pen, thread, rosemary → Materials · New moon → Timing · My phrase, written on the strip → Formula · Fold, tie and carry → Action · Keep it, renew in a month → Closing
- 2. Light the recipe's three lamps, in order. Lamp 1 · Prepare → Lamp 2 · Write → Lamp 3 · Fold
- 3. Trace a protective oval around your name. A closed oval around a strip bearing your name; start on the right and go clockwise.
- 4. Choose the moon to make your amulet. New moon, Waxing crescent, First quarter, Waxing gibbous, Full moon, Waning gibbous, Last quarter, Waning crescent
Safety
- Do not swallow the salt, the ritual water, plants or oils. Nothing in this room goes on your skin.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding or allergies: avoid essential oils and herbs on the skin or in smoke, and check with a health professional first.
- Your intention is about you. Nothing to harm, control or bind another person.
🕯️ Candle out · complete a mission to light it
The streak candle is only an on-screen element. If a room suggests a real candle, follow its safety rules.
Fun fact
The PGM date from the 2nd century BCE to the 5th century CE; around 1827 the collector Anastasi bought about half a dozen.
