Dreaming of snakes: meaning and interpretation

What sheds its skin

Vital energy, fear, and a renewal that still feels dangerous.

Few dream images stay with you like a snake. If you're looking up the meaning of dreaming of snakes, start here: it is not a bad omen and it is not a curse. A snake sheds its skin when the old one no longer fits, and it tends to show up in dreams when something in you is outgrowing its old shape too.

Common snake dreams

A snake biting you: the dream points to the place where an energy you've been ignoring is starting to make itself felt. The bite isn't punishment. It's an urgent bid for your attention.

A black snake or a white snake: black often carries what still lives in the shadow. White leans toward clarity, wisdom and healing: the same force, closer to the light.

Lots of snakes, or a pit of snakes: several small worries moving at once, or a surge of life force that hasn't found its channel yet.

Killing a snake: it can be a victory over fear, or the urge to get rid of something you'd be better off hearing out. Notice how you felt afterward. Relieved, or strangely emptier?

What Jung saw in the serpent

For Carl Jung, the serpent is one of the oldest images of the unconscious: raw libido, instinct older than language, the knowledge the shadow keeps. In yogic tradition, kundalini is pictured as a serpent coiled at the base of the spine, a dormant energy that transforms as it awakens. And the rod of Asclepius, still the emblem of medicine, shows a snake wound around a staff: what can poison can also heal. Taming the snake doesn't mean killing it. It means giving it a temple instead of a basement.

Questions to sit with

What skin are you outgrowing right now?

What desire, anger or intuition have you kept low to the ground so you wouldn't have to see it?

If the snake could speak, what would it ask of you?

Do not step on what moves in the grass. Ask which skin has already grown too small.
