Death and rebirth
Dreaming of crocodiles: meaning and interpretation
The jaws that swallow and give back
An ancient, cold force that drags you down in order to transform.
The crocodile is one of those animals that seem to come from another age, and in a dream its stillness can be more frightening than its attack. If you're wondering what it means to dream of crocodiles, start by setting the superstitions aside: it isn't a sign of betrayal or of real danger. Crocodiles live between water and land, and they tend to appear when something ancient and powerful in you is drawing close to the shore of consciousness.
Common crocodile dreams
A crocodile attacking you or dragging you into the water: a situation or emotion pulling you into the depths. It's frightening because there's no bargaining with it, but being pulled under is also a way of being transformed.
A crocodile lying still on the bank: something waiting, motionless, for you to look at it. An old tension, a family matter or an anger that hasn't moved in a long time.
A crocodile or an alligator under the bed, in the house or in the pool: the ancient breaking into the everyday. The dream suggests this is no longer far away; it's on your ground.
Escaping a crocodile, or overpowering it: the strength to walk out of the water on your own. You might also ask whether you're running from something that, if faced, would change something in you.
The Jungian view
In ancient Egypt, Sobek, the crocodile-headed god, was bound up with the Nile floods that made the land fertile. And many cultures tell of heroes swallowed by a monster who emerge renewed from its belly. Jung read this motif as the night sea journey: consciousness descends, is swallowed by the unconscious and returns transformed. The crocodile embodies those ancient jaws that frighten us precisely because they don't leave things as they were. Seeing it this way doesn't take away the fear, but it gives the fear back its meaning.
Questions to sit with
What situation do you feel pulling you into the depths?
What old matter has been waiting on the bank for you to look at it?
If you let yourself be pulled under a little, what part of you might come back renewed?
Don't stand there arguing with the jaws. Ask which part of you needs to go down into the water in order to change.
