The Shadow
Dreaming of cockroaches: meaning and interpretation
What survives in the cracks
What was rejected and persists, coming back out when the lights go off.
Few images provoke as much revulsion as a cockroach, and in a dream that disgust can run through your whole body. If you're wondering what it means to dream of cockroaches, start by letting go of the guilt: the dream isn't saying you're dirty, and it isn't a sign of bad luck. The cockroach is the creature that survives in the cracks, and it tends to appear when something you chose not to look at is still alive and finding its way back out.
Common cockroach dreams
Cockroaches coming out of the walls or drawers: small matters, kept out of sight, that multiplied in the dark. It isn't an invasion; it's a sign that it's time to open up and take stock.
A cockroach crawling on you: the issue won't stay at arm's length anymore. The dream brings it right up to your skin so you can't keep ignoring it.
A cockroach in your bed or your food: something unsettling is touching what's most intimate, your rest or what nourishes you. It's worth asking what's disturbing your peace in that area.
Killing cockroaches, or finding they won't die: it can be the relief of setting a boundary, or the weariness of something that keeps coming back. What resists that hard may be asking to be understood before it's gotten rid of.
The Jungian view
In analytical psychology, the shadow is everything the ego pushes away as unpleasant, shameful or unworthy. And what gets pushed away doesn't disappear: it hides, it persists, and it comes out when our guard is down, just like cockroaches when the lights go off. Kafka imagined a man waking up as an insect, and that image still touches the part of us that feels unwanted. Integrating the shadow doesn't mean loving what disgusts you; it means no longer fearing that looking at it will make you less worthy. Often, what repels us most holds a power to survive that is yours too.
Questions to sit with
What small matter have you been sweeping under the rug?
What part of yourself feels so unwanted that you'd rather not turn on the light?
What capacity to endure and survive could you recognize as your own?
Turn the light on slowly. What scurries off to hide is also showing you where it lives.
